2017 En-Primeur Campaign is Well and Truly Underway
With the frenzy of the en-primeur campaign in Bordeaux underway, its hardly surprising there has been an extremely good level of interest from all corners of the world.
En-primeur is the time of year the Chateaux release the prices of their latest vintages. The expectation of the 2017 vintage was that it was going to be 'ok' but nothing spectacular vintage. This comes after two stunning years, the 2009, 2010 and the decidedly mediocre 2011. With this in mind the question on all the merchants lips were 'what are the release prices going to be?'.
The Chateaux did not fail to impress with release prices of the 2016 vintage significantly below that of the 2015. In fact the 2012 is the cheapest on the market for most Chateaux. The campaign is still ongoing but if the prices thus far are anything to go by then we are in for a treat. Chateau Lafite Rothschild releasing below £5000 per case. This represent some 30% less than that of the 2011 release. Many of the top Chateaux have reduced the price for their premier cru as to encourage the market and push prices.
Woolf Sung believe that even though the 2017vintage is not the greatest, there are some real opportunities to be had especially if you are looking over the longer term. The likes of Lafite, Margaux, Mouton and Lynch Bages all represent excellent value for money and as such if you are thinking of moving into the fine wine market now would be an opportune moment.
Will we see these prices again in the future? Well that really does depend on future vintages. Crystal ball anyone?
