Is Investing in Coloured Diamonds Worth It

Coloured diamonds may have gotten their tints either naturally, during the formation process, or artificially. Many artificially coloured diamonds are rather low-end stones, the colourless ones being generally more demanded and thus more valuable. However, there are also diamonds naturally coloured that are highly esteemed by collectors worldwide. The most famous example is perhaps the pink diamond which comes from the Argyle mine in Australia.

Naturally coloured diamonds are mostly yellow, blue, champagne, and pink.

  • Yellow diamonds are mined from various sources throughout the globe. Usually they are mounted on settings and are available at fairly reasonable prices. A shade sought by collectors is canary-yellow. It’s important to note the distinction between natural yellow diamonds and white diamonds which have a strong yellow tint. The latter are not as valuable and are generally considered a poor white variety.
  • Blue diamonds are usually harder in colour than sapphires, which are famous for their blue tint. Blue diamonds are used in settings and are less valuable than white or clear diamonds. Still, they are worth considering when you buy diamonds for investment because they can fetch a good price when mounted on an exquisite ring or choker.
  • Champagne diamonds come in a variety of shades, but generally tend to be lighter. They are usually considered less valuable than those of other colours.
  • Pink diamonds are the most valuable of all coloured diamonds. They are excellent for investment, though they are not easy to get. The Argyle mine in Australia is renowned for producing pink diamonds. However, intense pink diamonds remain relatively rare – most stones classified as pink have only a faint shade of pink.
