If you should travel between Springbok and Pofadder in South Africa, you would see nothing but flat, bare ground for hours on end, with the African sun glaring down on it relentlessly. Considered one of the best solar investments of the moment, the Jasper Power Project is seeing noteworthy backings from some of the biggest global names; causing quite a stir on both the local and international front.
Upon its completion, it is estimated that the farm will generate enough energy to run around thirty thousand South African homes, at rates that put the current national energy provider (Eskom) to shame. As it stands, Eskom is facing a lot of scrutiny over its Medupi Power Plant, which is washed in controversy. Locals are also still dealing with rotation-based power cuts (called load-shedding) which have been plaguing the country since early 2007.
These issues make the Jasper Power Project the perfect candidate for some of the best solar investments, as the project is being supported on both national and international levels. But couple that with the fact that solar energy has recently proven to have higher returns than any other renewable energy market (this includes wind farms), and the fact that technology now makes solar farms cheaper to install (quicker returns on your money); and you are left with a great investment opportunity. Plus, it is still in its earliest stages, maximising investment scope.
