Requirements for Obtaining an Investor Visa in the UK

Requirements for Obtaining an Investor Visa in the UK

As an investor looking to investing in the UK, it is important to understand the requirements for obtaining an investor visa. There are many requirements an applicant must consider prior to a visa application.

Known as the Tier 1 Visa, the investor visa in the UK is a requirement for those wishing to invest within the country.

1 – Minimum £1 Million – The first requirements a potential investor must have is at least one million pounds, or the equivalent in their own money, readily available to the investor. You must have these funds available at the time of visa application.

2 – Ready to Invest £750,000 in the UK – Though a potential investor does not have to pre-determine the exact investment, an investor must be prepared to invest at least £750,000 within the UK once an Investor visa has been granted. You may use the remaining £250,000 of your original £1 million any way you wish and it does not have to be used in the capacity of investment in the UK.

3 – Full-Time Investor – As a potential investor visa holder, you must be a full investor. This means that you cannot be employed in any capacity other than managing your personal investment finances.

4 – Time in Country – You do not have to be a citizen of the UK, nor are you required to apply for citizenship. However, you must be prepared to spend approximately 50% of your time in the UK during your visa’s tenure.

5 – Language Requirement – You must meet the English language requirements set forth by the UK. If you did not earn an English speaking degree, you will be required to sit for, and pass, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). There are four components to the IELTS test – listening, reading, writing and speaking. In order to pass, an applicant must score at least 6.5 on each of the four test components. The test measures an applicant’s ability to communicate in English in all four areas. (This requirement is sometimes waived but on a case-by-case basis.)

If you meet all the preliminary requirements for a Tier 1 Investor Visa, you then may proceed with your application to UK Visa Bureau. Once you have made an application for your visa, the United Kingdom Visa Bureau will notify you of the status of your visa application as soon as your application has been processed. This process typically takes between three and four months.
