Imitate Modern Gallery
As one of the most popular urban art galleries in London, Imitate Modern Gallery features inspiring and sometimes controversial works from emerging artists as well as established stars. A strong celebrity culture influence can be seen in many of the exhibitions the gallery has hosted over the last two years, but that doesn’t mean this gallery is all posh. Serious sculpture, sophisticated abstract painting, some street art, in particular graffiti, and even beautiful T-shirt designs have all been on display in this vibrant gallery.
So, what exactly can you see in the Imitate Modern Gallery? A lot of contemporary photography for a start, whether it’s from top Hollywood photographer Tyler Shields or emerging artists like Fenton Bailey, son of David Bailey. Tyler Shields, is, in fact a household name in this gallery, where several of his most interesting and often controversial artworks have been displayed, including his Birkin Series, photos of a $100,000 handbag being set on fire and destroyed, Suspense Series of photographs focusing on the motion of the body, Chromatic Series featuring wild splashes of colour, and Well Hung, containing some of his most gory and sexually-charged images.
Imitate Modern Gallery isn’t all pop culture though. Xavier González d’Ègara’s The Three Seasons is a good example of some of the more intellectually challenging artworks that the gallery displays. In his large, beautiful canvases, Xavier González d’Ègara’s combines the ideal with the real, turning his painting into architecture for historical narratives. That sounds fascinating, doesn’t it? It is, but to discover its beauty you’ll have to see it for yourself. Other artists that have exhibited at Imitate Modern include photographer Philippe Shangti, graffiti artist Rich Simmons, street artist Stik, cult cartoonists Modern Toss, as well as pop artist Romero Britton.
Imitate Modern Gallery is the place to go if you want to see hot urban art.
