Understanding the Meaning behind Contemporary Art
As the art world slowly begins to embrace present day artists, there are still many that fail to understand the meaning behind the term contemporary art. To many of those from the old-school art world, contemporary art is nothing more than a piece produced in the middle of the 20th century by someone calling themselves an artist. Too often contemporary art is compared to the art produced by such artists as Monet or Picasso and since most do not measure up to those standards, are not considered artists.
This is where the confusion really comes in since most contemporary artists are not trying to create art compared to the masters. They are using their own artistic flair to create their personal interpretation of art. This contemporary art movement has taken a new direction in the electronic age with many artists, as well as their critics, focusing more on how the artistic piece was created rather than the art itself. Critics of this post-modern art era contend that the art created on a computer or other electronic device cannot be considered art, regardless of the finished product.
The new production methods have also given birth to many different levels of contemporary art such as conceptualism, photo-realist art and video art. Somewhere between modern art and contemporary art there was a short period referred to as abstract art that still has many followers today. However, most art followers see no real purpose for a piece of work that is viewed and understood only by the artist and refuse to accept it as art.
Regardless of the type of art production used, most gallery patrons and curators hold onto the theory that contemporary art is any form of art created after 1945, but there are some that hold to contemporary art being created after 1970, partly because it ties it into a neat little bundle, by Michael Angel Plaza.
